Biography

Yuna Youn, LCSW has 7+ years experience working with people who struggle with anger, anxiety and depression. She has been working at Rikers Island for over 5 years with the 18-21 year old and adult male populations. While attending NYU Silver School of Social Work she interned with Midtown Community Court, Womankind (formerly New York Asian Women's Center), a teen drama therapy group and teen homeless shelter. As a member and past presenter with the National Organization of Forensic Social Work, she is interested in the changing face of forensic social work, social justice, and how they relate to Asian American mental health.

My Approach

I work with a perspective that is inclusive, validating and non-judgmental to help others become "unstuck". My approach emphasizes framing concerns in context of the environment, particularly in a world that is literally toxic and filled with uncertainty and fear. It exposes the narratives we tell ourselves as simply that--stories--and together we explore alternative endings and how to get there. In the change process, we can discuss different strategies and how to use them in a way that is both effective and self-compassionate. I will share the knowledge I've gained from my clinical experience and own therapy--things that I have seen really work.

“I felt very alienated from others around me, but my sessions with Yuna helped me become more accepting of myself, others, and the circumstances I was in. At I’ve felt the extremes of suicidal and of anger towards others, but after my sessions, I felt better equipped to self-regulate my emotions and utilize healthy coping mechanisms.”
