Biography
I was born in Seoul, South Korea and came to the States at the age of sixteen to finish high school and went on to major in engineering. I returned to Korea for work but knew it was not what I wanted to do. I came back to the US to further my education and training in what has been my passion for a long time; psychology and counseling. I received a bachelor's degree in Psychology from Dallas Baptist University, a master’s in Biblical Counseling from Dallas Theological Seminary and currently pursuing a doctorate degree in Educational Counseling at Texas A&M-Commerce. As a Licensed Professional Counselor in Texas, I work for the Mesquite ISD Family Support Center and Lifecare Counseling Services. My wife, Yoonmi, and I share the experience of spending our teenage years in different cultures and having to learn a foreign language. As a couple, we enjoy searching for good restaurants, new recipes, and watching Korean variety shows.
My Approach
When I started having life problems in my late twenties, I came to realize that there was very little professional counseling available in South Korea. This is why I became interested in acquiring the education and professional training in counseling. As a Korean counselor practicing in the U.S., there may be hindrances for me in counseling European Americans; however, what I have learned through counseling Korean American clients is that I have the background and experience to better understand their acculturation and intergenerational issues.
